The Illinois Nuclear Safety Radiation Protection Act of 1990 (420 ILCS 40) is scheduled to expire on January 1, 2027. ISSRT Legislative Committee Chair, Mary Hood, has been diligently monitoring the situation and has been informed by IEMA that the agency is working closely with the NRC to draft a replacement bill. Meredith Check, Director of Government Relations for the ASRT and the Illinois Radiological Society, have also been notified and their lobbyists have been made aware of the issue.
In follow-up discussions with IEMA, the ISSRT has learned that the current plan is to retain the law’s existing language while extending its expiration date by an additional five to ten years. The ISSRT Legislative Committee will continue to work closely with IEMA to monitor the bill’s progress, which must be introduced to the General Assembly by the February 7, 2026 deadline. The sunset extension language is expected to be introduced during the Spring 2026 legislative session, with signing anticipated in Summer 2026.
The ISSRT extends its sincere appreciation to Mary Hood, ISSRT Legislative Chair, for her continued dedication and proactive efforts in tracking this critical piece of legislation on behalf of our members and the profession.
